BenU Checklist

Final Transcripts

You must submit final transcripts. These need to come directly from the school to be considered official. It cannot be delivered to you.

For new freshmen, please submit your final high school transcript showing graduation.  You can ask your high school to send the transcript to [email protected] or SEALED transcripts by mail to:

Transfer Student Transcripts

If you are a transfer student, you need to submit final transcripts from all previous institutions.  Many institutions have a way to order the transcript online on the institution’s website. In any case, you can have SEALED transcripts sent to:

Buy your textbooks (click here to find out what books you need and to purchase them)

• Remember if you purchase your textbook elsewhere, copy the ISBN number for the textbook to make sure you are getting the correct edition.  The ISBN number is provided in our ecampus textbook search in the link above.

Check your schedule the night before classes to make sure the room location has not changed.  You can check your schedule by logging into MyBenU, clicking on the Manage Classes tile, and select View My Classes in the left menu.

Advisors

Attend Advising Check-In during first week of classes. You will receive an email from your advisor with instructions for checking in by email if you have no questions or stopping by the Advising Center in Goodwin 150 if you have questions or need to adjust your schedule.  Be sure to check your student email account for this information.

Did you forget who your advisor is?  You can find your advisor by logging into MyBenU, then select the Academic Records tile, and then click on Advisors in the left menu.

Eagle Lingo

Accommodations: Special accommodation services are available for students with disabilities on a case-by-case basis, provided that documentation from a properly licensed clinician supports the accommodation. Students eligible under the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), whose disability interferes with a major life activity, are urged to self-identify so that the process for receiving assistance can begin as early as possible.  Please note that short-term accommodations for injuries, surgeries, and serious illness may also be available.

Add/Drop Date: This typically refers to the first week of classes in which a student can add or drop a course without the course showing up on their transcript.  After that date if a student wishes to add a course, it is up to the discretion of the professor and department leadership and requires completing a late add form with signatures. If you drop a course after the add/drop deadline, it is considered a withdrawal from a course (see withdrawal from a course below)

Academic Support Center (ASC): The Academic Support Center (ASC) will enhance your learning by offering free tutoring, skills for academic success and writing assistance. ASC also provides accommodations for eligible students (see Accommodations above). Our goal is to help students grow and succeed at BenU and beyond. We offer a variety of services with in-person or virtual academic support and accommodations.

Ben Central: Located in Goodwin 214, Ben Central is your one-stop resource for Financial Aid and Registrar services. Meet with staff to discuss financial aid, payment plans, scholarships, transcripts, graduation audits, and directory information.

Benedict’s Basket/Food Pantry: Caring for students’ basic needs is one of the best ways we support our community. Learning that 25-33% of college students are food insecure, in collaboration with our Nutrition department, Campus Ministry opened Benedict’s Basket on our Lisle campus, which is available to all students. It is located on the main floor of Lownik Hall in Room 102.

BenUNet:  Using a single sign-on (SSO) with your Benedictine credentials, this will take you to a student dashboard filled with links to a variety of resources such as e-mail, D2L, MyBenU, help desk tickets, and more.

Bookstore: This can mean two things.  First, there is our virtual textbook store where you can purchase or rent textbooks for your courses.  Second, there is our “bookstore” which is really our campus store in Krasa on the main floor toward the back that sells all sorts of fun Benedictine gear and school supplies.

Campus Ministry: Campus Ministry brings to life the Benedictine hallmarks through volunteer projects, small group faith sharing, interfaith programs, and more! Stop by the Subiaco Center, Lownik 102 for a place to study, meet friends, or grab some food. Mass is celebrated each weekday at 12:30pm and Sundays at 4pm. The Interfaith Prayer Room in Kindlon 136/137 is open each weekday.

Campus Safety:  Campus Safety is available 24/7, 365 days a year. The office is located in the parking garage on the lower level.  Campus Safety patrols campus on foot and by vehicle to ensure a secure environment. Campus Safety offers free safety escorts to any location on campus, anytime.  They can assist with car trouble or if you are locked out of your dorm room or Founders’ Woods apartment – first time’s free, but there’s a fee for subsequent lockouts. Campus Safety maintains a lost and found for 90 days, so check with us if you’ve misplaced something. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance!

Catalog:  The catalog provides an overview of all University policies and rules, major and minor requirements and course descriptions.  It is important to use the catalog for the academic year you started at Benedictine because those are the requirements you will need to complete for your degree.  Prior catalogs are available in the menu to the left.

Counseling: The Benedictine University Counseling Center offers confidential counseling services to support students’ personal, social, and academic success. They provide individual, couples, and group therapy, crisis intervention, and referrals, all in a safe and encouraging environment. The Counseling Center prioritizes students in crisis and can be reached by phone or visited in person.  They are located in the basement of Krasa.

College of Science and Health (COSH):  the College of Science and Health includes faculty and the majors and minors that are part of the Biological Sciences, Mathematics and Computational Sciences, Nursing and Health, Nutrition and Public Health, and Physical Sciences

D2L (Desire to Learn):  Benedictine uses D2L as their learning platform.  Every course will have its own D2L page.  Each course will post the syllabus and gradebook as well as announcements and assignments available on D2L.

E-mail: All students are assigned a Benedictine student e-mail account.   Your e-mail address is the letter B followed by your ID# @ben.edu (ex: [email protected]).  You can access your email through BenUNet.

EWN (Early Warning Notice): Professors will send this to students and their advisors if they are concerned about a student’s progress. It will note concerns such as missing classes, having a low grade, or missing assignments. If a professor thinks you should get support from a learning specialist, see them during office hours, or drop the course, the warning will also include these recommendations. 

Goodwin College of Business and Liberal Arts (GCOBLA):  The Goodwin College of Business and Liberal arts  includes the faculty and majors and minors that are part of Business, Education, History, Philosophy &Theology, Interdisciplinary, Languages & Literature, Psychology, Society, Justice & Politics, and Visual, Performing & Media Arts.

Handshake:  Handshake is a career platform designed to help students take control of their career destination. The Handshake community consists of over 20 million students, alumni, employers, and career educators all looking to make searching, hiring, and teaching career easier. It is your one-stop shop for anything career.

Meal Plan:  Whether you are a commuter or resident, there is a meal plan for you!  You can get meals at Benny’s in Krasa by swiping your card or use the dining dollars for purchases at other places like #Coffee.  Just click the Meal Plan link to sign up.

Midterm:   Midterm is exactly what it sounds like—it is the middle of the term, the halfway point.  At midterm, you will receive a grade in your class to let you know how you are doing.  This grade will help you know if you are doing well in the class, need to improve, or may need to withdraw from the class.

MyBenU/Peoplesoft: This account will let you register for classes, view class schedules, check grades, and track your academic progress.  You can also view tuition statements, manage accounts, and handle billing details through the Business Office.

Probation:  Students are required to maintain satisfactory academic standing during their university careers (a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher). If a student fails to achieve satisfactory academic standing at the end of a semester (a cumulative GPA of at least 2.000 for undergraduate students), that student will be placed on academic probation during the following semester.  Students on academic probation will receive assistance from a variety of resources on campus to support their academic success. If a student fails to achieve satisfactory academic standing at the end of the probationary period, the student is dismissed from enrollment because of poor scholarship.

Resident Assistant (RA): Resident Assistants are student leader staff members responsible for building community for the residents, keeping residents informed on department and campus wide events and procedures, confronting policy and documenting policy violations, mediating roommate issues, and participate in nightly duty to ensure safety and security in campus housing.

Residence Life:  The Residence Life staff is dedicated and responsible for fostering a living environment that promotes and supports Benedictine’s Missions, priorities, and values. The residential community embodies the Benedictine hallmarks and traditions through various Student Engagement initiatives.

Sister Judith Ann Heble, OSB Center for Benedictine Values: The Center provides mission-centered orientation and continuing education for the entire University community. The Center seeks to foster awareness and appreciation of the Catholic intellectual tradition, Catholic social teaching, and the legacy of Benedictine wisdom. Annual signature events organized by the Center include the Visiting Scholar in Catholic Thought lectures every fall and the Benedictine Heritage Lecture and the Faith and Reason Symposium every spring.

Student Life

Syllabus: A syllabus outlines a course schedule, required coursework, and rules for the course.  You can find your syllabus for each of your courses on D2L.

Withdraw from a Course: A grade of “W” is recorded to indicate that a student has withdrawn from a course. This is a non-punitive, permanent grade that maintains an academic transcript record of enrollment in a course. “W” grades cannot be appealed.
