Benedictine University’s (BenU) St. Benedict Chapel has a new home on campus. Lownik Hall will now house the chapel and provide a newer, more accommodating space for worship right in the center of BenU’s quad and in close proximity to the Sister Judith Ann Heble, OSB Center for Benedictine Values. Previously, the chapel was located on the fourth floor in Kindlon Hall.
“The relocation of St. Benedict Chapel is an answer to prayer and a dream come true. Now the Chapel is at the heart of our University campus, visible to all and accessible to all. We are deeply grateful for all members of the community who have made the Chapel project a true labor of love. It will be a house of prayer for everyone who calls Benedictine home. Opened in the wintry days of Advent, it will inaugurate a new springtime of Spirit in our University life.”
– BenU Chief Mission Officer Peter Huff, PhD
Along with the relocation of the chapel comes an expansion of the Adoration Chapel as well – located adjacent to St. Benedict Chapel. The placement of the tabernacle in the Adoration Chapel provides a secluded space for private prayer and adoration to honor the Lord through personal worship. Additionally, BenU students Julia Handzel and Krystian Chlebek graciously gifted a Black Madonna piece for adoration.
The Black Madonna, to me, symbolizes Polish pride and perseverance. I am proud to be Polish and share my culture and tradition with those around me. I wanted to share that symbol with everyone who is going through tough times or is struggling to never give up and have faith in the Holy Mother and God. The donation was made alongside my girlfriend, Julia Handzel, because being with her has strengthened my connection with God. We both hope the Black Madonna Blesses the school and anyone who prays to her.
– BenU Student Krystian Chlebek
Any and all are welcome to join for Mass. Currently, Mass is held at St. Benedict Chapel Sundays at 5 p.m. and Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. The relocation of St. Benedict Chapel should further enhance Benedictine University’s vision of becoming a thought leader in Catholic higher education grounded in the values of St. Benedict.
