MLK Day Event at St. Benedict Chapel and Kindlon Hall

Benedictine University (BenU) celebrated the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a prayer service and Alumni Panel.

The event started with a prayer service at St. Benedict Chapel in Lownik Hall. The service began with remarks from BenU President, Dr. Joseph Foy. Immediately after were the opening prayers from professors Jayashree Sarathy, PhD, and Bernarr Newman, MS.

The prayer service also included a history of the black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, readings from Dr. King’s work, a history of spirituals, and a performance from the Benedictine Concert Choir.

The keynote for the service was delivered by BenU Chief Diversity Officer, Julie Dockery, EdD, and the closing prayer was given by BenU Director of Campus Ministry, Carrie Ankeny, MA.

Following the prayer service at St. Benedict Chapel, was an alumni keynote panel featuring Maurice Bell, ‘87; Ephriam Fitzgerald, ‘91, ‘10; and Marie Jenkins, ‘00; held on the 5th floor of Kindlon Hall.

The event was sponsored by the Office of Belonging and Inclusion and the Sister Judith Ann Heble Center, OSB.
