Dr. Tim Marin, professor in the department of Physical Sciences, and alumnus (Chemistry B.S., math minor, 1996), was recognized at the Sept. 14 “Education Night” Program Meeting of the Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) with a Distinguished Service Award. The Chicago Section of the American Chemical Society is a professional organization of approximately 4,000 chemists in the greater Chicagoland area. It is the local branch of the national ACS – the largest scientific professional society in the world. The Chicago Section gives an annual award in special recognition for a long period of distinguished service to the Section. Dr. Marin has served on the Chicago Section Board of Directors since 2010.
Over the years, Dr. Marin has served in many capacities and leadership roles, including Programing Committee Co-Chair, Section Director, Nominating Committee, Budget Director, Finance Committee Chair, Office Committee Chair, and Section Chair. He also serves ACS at the national level as a member of the ACS Council. During his time as Section Chair, Dr. Marin led strategic planning efforts that resulted in an overhaul and modernization of the entire Chicago ACS Board structure and meeting format, greatly improving operating efficiency and communication between committees. At that time, he purposefully reached out to female and minority chemists in the Chicago area to fill Board vacancies, greatly diversifying the Board composition. As Budget Director, he led work to streamline and add transparency to the Section financial operations. As Finance Committee Chair, he also led a team to re-strategize and reorganize investments of the Section endowments to secure long-term financial stability. Dr. Marin’s efforts and leadership have very positively impacted Section operations and significantly contributed to the greater good of the scientific community in service to all 4,000 Chicago ACS members.
