Joann Massey, MBA, graduated from Benedictine University in 2008 with a Master of Business Administration in Financial Management. Her time at BenU helped refine her strategic thinking and leadership skills, laying a solid foundation for a career dedicated to driving impactful change in both the public and private sectors. Today, Dr. Massey serves as the President and CEO of the Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) for Memphis and Shelby County in Tennessee.
In this role, she leads initiatives to stimulate sustainable economic development, attract investment, and create opportunities for residents and businesses throughout the region. Under her leadership, EDGE has championed projects that generate transformative change, such as the Northside Renaissance Development and the Binghampton Gateway Center, which have revived underserved neighborhoods and provided essential services to communities.
She also oversaw the implementation of the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) program, which supports small businesses in high-crime areas by fostering safety and revitalization, proving that economic and community development go hand in hand.
Dr. Massey’s achievements have earned her widespread recognition. She has been named one of the Memphis Business Journal’s Super Women in Business and Memphis Power 100. She has been featured in Forbes and Black Enterprise Magazine. She has also received awards for Economic Development Trailblazer and Lifetime Achievement Award for Humanitarian work from the White House.
