COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS
The advantage of a criminology program like Benedictine’s is that it is theory-based.
We look at the underlying causes of the issues in our criminal justice system and urge students to think of ways to solve them. These include recidivism rates; crimes rates; race, class and gender issues; as well as problems that may be inherent in the system itself. Our students are taught to think critically while learning life lessons that will be instrumental in building a successful career.
Our program is a critical criminological program that pushes critical thinking. While our goal is to create students who can be successful at all levels of the criminal justice system, our students also learn strategies and create solutions to real-life scenarios, which lead to career advancement. You’ll gain key skills employers prize: Ethical Problem-Solving; Communication Skills; Collaboration, Teamwork, and Leadership; Competency in Intercultural and Global Relationships; Cultural and Civic Literacy.
Our students have interned with organizations such as Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Naperville Police Department, Illinois State Police and DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.
Inside-Out courses let our students take classes alongside incarcerated students at Sheridan Correctional Center. Inside-Out’s goal is to generate social change through transformative education, and these courses have been life-changing for students on both sides.
