As a parent or family member, Benedictine University considers you to be a valued partner with us in your student’s success!

College years are filled with learning and growth, and we hope that the information on this page will help you find answers to any questions you might have. During times of challenge, disappointment, or uncertainty, we want to help students (and their parents/families) maintain their equilibrium, build up their resilience to change and challenges in their lives, and to move forward in a positive and productive manner.

Our campus is blessed with a myriad of resources, and along with parents/families we hope to promote these resources to students so they can become their own best advocate both while in college and in their lives after graduation.

According to the US Department of Education, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords parents the right to have access to their children’s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended, and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records. When a student turns 18 years old or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student. The FERPA statute is found at 20 U.S.C. § 1232g and the FERPA regulations are found at 34 CFR Part 99. According to FERPA, parents no longer have access to their student’s educational records,

including their grades, regardless of whether they are paying for their student’s education. We encourage parents and students to create open lines of communication so that parents can get information such as grades from their students’ best sources.

Please consider taking the time to discuss this with your student. A FERPA form can be completed at any time and can be found here.
