Top 7 Preventable Threats to Men's Health
1. Heart Disease:
Smoking is one of the leading causes of heart disease. Smoking builds up fatty substances in the arteries also known as atherosclerosis. When enough of these fatty substances or plaque build up, it causes the arteries to harden and decreases blood flow. As a result, heart disease, stroke and death may occur.
Eating a healthy diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains in combination with the CDC's (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) 1 hour of daily physical activity will help prevent heart disease.
As with heart disease, don't smoke, maintain a healthy weight through proper nutrition and healthy diet, protect yourself from the sun, limit alcohol consumption, take early detection seriously!

According to the MayoClinic (2011), motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of death in men. Practice safe driving, wear your seatbelt, don't drink and drive, and avoid driving when sleepy.
4. Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease:
This includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Once again, avoid smoking! Practice good hygiene i.e. hand washing, in order to avoid respiratory infections such as colds, flu, and pneumonia.
Not all stroke risk factors are preventable, but most are. Here is what you can do to help. Management of chronic conditions such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure via treatment suggestions from your doctor is key. If you are diabetic, keeping your blood sugar in check is a sure fire way of preventing stroke.

6. Type 2 Diabetes:
According to the MayoClinic (2011), "Type 2 diabetes — the most common type of diabetes — affects the way your body uses blood sugar (glucose). Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to heart disease, eye problems, nerve damage and other complications". To prevent type 2 diabetes, eat a healthy diet, exercise, and if you are overweight, consider losing those few extra pounds through diet and exercise.
If left untreated, depression can lead to suicide. It is very important to address depression with your doctor. If you are experiencing feelings of sadness, loss, or lose interest in normal activities, you should consult your doctor as treatment is available.
