Springfield: Students involved in Philippine mission

February 8, 2013

Four Benedictine University at Springfield students and the Director of Campus Ministry recently took part in a University Mission trip through the Diocese of Joliet in Bacolod, Philippines. The four students that attended the two-week mission trip last month included Jennifer Cronander, Hannah Deal, Marissa Hackwith and Gil Maruna as they accompanied Father Steven Janoski.

The group partnered with students from Benedictine University (Lisle), Lewis University, University of St. Francis and Kankakee Community College to help build homes and expand an elementary school house. The students had a 25 hour flight to Manila from Chicago O’Hare Airport.
The mission trip was a rewarding experience for those involved.

Benedictine freshman Gil Maruna, who had previously graduated from Routt Catholic High School in Jacksonville, commented that he was able to put his faith in action by giving those people something they could not live without. Maruna commented, “I’ve done some volunteer work in my hometown, but I wanted to branch out to somewhere not so close to home. I’m very thankful the donors provided me the means to do this service work overseas.”

The Filipino community worked alongside the group of students and clergy. Afterhours, Maruna and some of the other college men played basketball with their hosts. The bonds the students created with the Filipinos made the experience memorable according for the whole group of Benedictine students.
