Dr. Ralph Meeker Ph.D., Dean of the College of Science
"A layperson considers the meaning of Stability in the Rule of St. Benedict"
Friday,
November 13th, 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. in Krasa C
In Chapter 58 of The Rule, Benedict outlines the procedure for receiving brothers. When the novice is ready to be received into the community, after a long period of reflection, he promises stability, fidelity to monastic life, and obedience. [The Rule of St. Benedictine in English, edited by Timothy Fry, O.S.B. (Collegeville, MN, The Liturgical Press, 1982), 58.17]
This conversatio will explore questions such as:
- How does Benedict's emphasis on stability translate into practice for a layperson living in modern time?
- How can we practice stability to enhance our own lives and those around us?
Readings include:
Chapter 4 of Esther de Waal's Seeking God: The Way of St. Benedict (Collegeville, MN, The Liturgical Press, 1984, pp. 55-68)
