We need volunteers to help during Spring 2015 Commencement

CommencementGreetings Parents,

I am Linda D. Owens, associate dean for Student Development at Benedictine. I have the awesome privilege of coordinating ushers for the winter and spring Commencement Convocations. What a joy it is to see our students reach graduation day after putting in many hours of studying. As you can imagine, it takes many volunteers to make this ceremony a success.

I am taking this opportunity to invite you to show your support and assist as an usher at this year’s Spring Commencement Convocation on Saturday, May 9. The undergraduate ceremony will be held from 9:45 a.m.-11:15 a.m. and the graduate ceremony will be held from 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

If you and/or a family member (children must be 12 and older) would like to volunteer for one or both ceremonies, or would like more information, please contact me at (630) 829-6123 or lowens@ben.edu.

Encourage your student to get through finals week with a "Survival Care Package"
mhFinals week is fast approaching, which means students will be spending additional time studying in preparation. Some may seek out snack or comfort foods to sustain them as they work. If instead, you would like to send them a Finals Survival Care Package filled with goodies and a personal note of good wishes or encouragement written by you. To order, please click here. You may also contact Jill Poskin at (630) 829-6366 or jposkin@ben.edu.

Each care package is $35, of which $10 will go toward the  2015 Class Year Giving Program to benefit the University community. All orders must be received by Thursday, April 23.

The packages will be available for student pickup in the Krasa Student Center on Thursday, April 30, Friday, May 1, and Tuesday, May 5. We will contact each student recipient by phone or email with exact pickup information.
Students travel to Philippines, serve others in need

messagehomeIt has been another great semester in Campus Ministry. We began the semester with eight students traveling to the Philippines to build homes for the homeless. This was our ninth year working for the Gawad Kalinga organization. Students embraced the Benedictine hallmark of community, recognizing that we are called to serve locally, nationally and internationally.

In February, Campus Ministry sponsored the “Busy Person’s Retreat.” During the retreat, students took time out of their hectic schedules to reflect on where they find God in their lives. It was an affirming experience for the students as they recognized that God is always with them in their journey. Since serving the community is a way of being at Benedictine, we held the second annual National Day of Service in April. Students spent time serving at five different nonprofit organizations in the community, strengthening our commitment of stewardship as a Benedictine institution.

The close of the semester brings new and exciting opportunities for our graduates and a time of rejuvenation for students after a busy and fulfilling year. Pope Francis reminds us, “Let us not be satisfied with a mediocre life.” Campus Ministry seeks to support students in their Benedictine academic career so that they can work toward accomplishing their goals and live a life driven by purpose.
