Summer Camps 2

Lisle, Illinois ~ Don't let your children's brains atrophy in front of the TV this summer when school lets out. Enroll them in Benedictine University's Summer Fun Day camp, where they can exercise both their bodies and minds.

Boys and girls ages 5-13 can choose from soccer, relay races, sand volleyball, fishing, water activities, arts and crafts and other activities to stay active and have fun this summer. Twice per week students will get an hour-long refresher of grade-appropriate math and reading concepts so they won't lose those all-important skills during the summer.

Studies show children who don't review their academics at some point during the summer are at risk of "summer slide," meaning they are more likely to fall behind once they head back to school. Play and physical exercise is also important to a child's success in school. According to a 2009 study in the journal Pediatrics, outdoor play activities are as important as a child's academic studies and can influence behavior, concentration and grades.

"We feel that keeping kids active and engaged, as well as working on their team-building skills, is a great alternative to sitting at home," said Marita Hyde, director of Benedictine's Summer Fun Day Camp. "It's a great opportunity to give kids a place to go that provides both physical and mental exercises for kids outside and inside."

Summer Fun Day Camp 2012 begins with the first of nine weekly sessions on Monday, June 11. Online registration begins April 1.

The camp is sponsored and operated by the University and its staff and students serve as counselors. The camp strives to maintain a 10:1 camper-to-staff ratio. Lunch is provided each day and campers can bring a snack to enjoy during the morning.

Children will also be invited to participate in a special police safety program and obstacle course, organized by the Benedictine University Police Department. Last year, the University was recognized as Illinois' safest campus among the state's four-year colleges and universities.

The camp runs from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $185 per week ($148 for July 2-6) and there is a $10 per session discount for a second child. Sessions are June 11-15, June 18-22, June 25-29, July 2-6 (no camp July 4), July 9-13, July 16-20, July 23-27, July 30-August 3 and August 6-10.

The Summer Fun Day Camp qualifies for a U.S. Income Tax childcare deduction.
