The Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum is a small natural history museum located on the second floor of the Michael and Kay Birck Hall of Science at Benedictine University. The museum represents the work of Fr. Hilary Jurica, O.S.B. and his brother, Fr. Edmund Jurica, O.S.B. who collected specimens for their students to use during their almost 100 combined years of teaching at Benedictine University. In the early 1970's, the Museum was placed in the hands of Fr. Theodore Suchy, O.S.B. who turned their collection of specimens into a thriving nature museum. Fr. Ted continued collecting and the collection grew to over 10,000 specimens, ranging from a tiny aphid to a whale skeleton. The Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum is open to the public as well as to school groups to enjoy and learn from the life's work of these three dedicated Monks. The museum currently has over 3,500 specimens on display!
The museum provides a unique learning environment that inspires life science education. We have expanded our outreach services to include a Jr. Internship program for local 6th - 12th grade students. This program provides hands-on learning experiences and interactive demonstrations exemplifying the work and research conducted at a natural history museum. Topics include collections care, the inventory and catalog processes, museum education, and exhibit research.
Spring Session: 2:30pm - 3:30pm, Thursdays, January 22, 2015 - May 28, 2015
It is with much sadness that we share the news that Fr. Theodore D. Suchy passed away on Sunday evening, October 28, 2012. Ever since he came to St. Procopius College as a student, he dedicated his life to this campus. He taught, ran the Biology department, was the campus chaplain, associate campus minister, director of Kohlbeck Hall, and curator of the Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum. We will miss you Fr. Ted!
Contributions to the museum in Fr. Ted's name can be made by contacting Karly Tumminello.
