Benedictine University and St. Procopius Abbey invite the public to attend “Advent at the Abbey” from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 14. St. Benedict dedicates chapter six of his Rule to silence. "Good words," he says, "are to be left unsaid out of esteem for silence." (RB 6:2) It is not that monastic men and women never speak; we should speak good and thoughtful words in specific places and at appropriate times. Advent is an appropriate time to listen to the Word of God and pray that God makes us more taciturn because "...the disciple is to be silent and listen." (RB 6:6). The schedule includes arrival and coffee, lauds, a morning prayer, readings, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Mass, lunch in the monastic refectory, a reflection, and a closing prayer and blessing. Join Santa and Mrs. Claus for a breakfast buffet with all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7 on the second floor of the Krasa Center. Santa will visit, pose for pictures and give each child a gift. Mrs. Claus will read her favorite Christmas story while Ernie the Elf eagerly demonstrates the art of holiday crafting to all who attend. Holiday movies, children’s games, prizes and a special raffle make Benedictine University one of Santa’s favorite stops outside of the North Pole. Tickets are $12 per person. The Center for Civic Leadership will present Erick-Woods Erickson, “Red States, Tea Parties and the Changing Republican Party,” at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12 on the second floor of the Krasa Student Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. Erickson is the editor-in-chief of RedState.com, a widely-read right-of-center blog on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Prior to leading RedState.com, Erickson practiced law for six years and oversaw a number of political campaigns at the federal, state and local levels. In addition to running RedState.com, Erickson is a Fox News contributor who spent three years at CNN and hosts a self-titled radio show on one of the nation's most listened to talk radio stations, WSB, in Atlanta, Ga. He has also appeared on the “Colbert Report” on the Comedy Central cable network. Erickson graduated with honors from Mercer University in Macon, Ga., majoring in History and Political Science. He earned a Juris Doctor at Mercer’s Walter F. George School of Law.
International Education Week is Thursday-Friday, November 7-15. The event kicks off with a presentation by Rhacel Parreñas, Ph.D., professor of Sociology and Gender Studies and chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Southern California, who will discuss and examine the experience of legal servitude in relation to issues of human trafficking and notions of modern-day slavery at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 7 in Birck Hall, Room 112. A screening of the movie, “Harvest of Empire,” a documentary about the United States’ intervention in Latin America and how it has contributed to Latino immigration in the United States, will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11 in the House of Benedict. A Study Abroad Fair will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. November 12 in the Krasa Center, Rooms A and B. “Taste of the World” will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13 in the Kindlon Hall Atrium. The “Face of Benedictine” contest winners will be announced at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15 in the House of Benedict.
Benedictine’s Graduation Fair for August and December 2013 graduates will be held from 12:00-7:00 p.m., Monday-Tuesday, November 18-19 in the Krasa Fireside Lounge. Graduates can pick up their cap and gown, obtain commencement information, have their cap and gown picture taken, receive career information, purchase a class ring and/or diploma frame, order personalized announcements, discuss their financial obligations and enjoy a raffle and refreshments. The Center for Mission and Identity will present Barbara Nicolosi, the founder and chair emeritus of Act One Inc., a nonprofit program that trains Christians for careers as Hollywood writers and executives, as part of its Visiting Scholar in Catholic Thought Series. Nicolosi will present “Why Do Pagans Make the Best Christian Films?” at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20 in the St. Benedict Chapel on the fourth floor of Kindlon Hall, and “Art, Story and Entertainment: Why Hollywood Matters” at 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, November 21 in Birck Hall, Room 112. Nicolosi is also executive director of the Galileo Film Studio at Azusa Pacific University and an adjunct professor of cinema at Pepperdine University. She is a Writers Guild of America, West member and has written screenplays for several Hollywood productions including as a co-writer for the upcoming 2014 film “Mary, Mother of the Christ.” She has worked in various roles on scores of other entertainment projects including “The Passion of the Christ,” “That Evening Sun” and numerous TV shows.

University Police will respond, assess the situation and take appropriate measures.

Campus Recreation, Residence Life and the Benedictine University Police are sponsoring a women’s self-defense class, “Fight Like A Girl,” from 8:00-10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13. “Fight Like A Girl” is taught by a team of certified instructors. The training includes practicing techniques full-force on a padded instructor and emphasizes close-range fighting using a woman's strongest weapons to target the attacker's weakest points. It also includes every day safety skills, which focus on awareness and prevention. Please wear workout attire. No tank-tops or shorts.
