University Notes

Benedictine University will host the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Student Leaders Program on the Lisle campus for the ninth consecutive year June 26-August 3. The MEPI Student Leaders Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State through a grant awarded to six U.S. academic institutions. MEPI operates in 18 countries; Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank/Gaza and Yemen. Twenty outstanding students from North Africa and the Middle East have been selected to participate in the MEPI program. They will spend approximately four weeks in residence at Benedictine University, attending classes focusing on leadership, democracy and culture.

Benedictine University has been awarded a $46,000, Illinois F-SCRAP grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to begin composting its food waste this year on the Lisle campus. Benedictine will team up with Compost Supply to capture food scraps as well as recyclables. This new composting effort will allow the University to divert in excess of 105,000 pounds (52.5 tons) per year of food waste from landfills and wastewater. Compostables include food scraps (even meat), paper napkins and compostable disposables. Recyclables include other paper, plastic and glass. Everything else is garbage. If you are interested in helping teach people to recycle and compost in the fall, please contact Jean-Marie Kauth at jkauth@ben.edu.
