Faculty and Staff Notes

Allan D. Gozum (Business and Finance Services) was selected as a 2014 honoree in the Daily Herald Business Ledger’s third annual “CFO of the Year” awards program.  Gozum will be honored at a reception and awards presentation on Tuesday, July 22, at the Stonegate Conference and Banquet Centre in Hoffman Estates.  He will also be profiled in the August 18 edition of the Business Ledger.

Heidi Roeber Rice, M.D. (Master of Public Health), who is board-certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine and a staff physician with HealthPartners Clinics in Minneapolis, Minn., in addition to teaching in Benedictine’s online M.P.H. program, published two articles that exhibit her expertise in the areas of women in the workplace and in underserved populations. In the article, “Fertility goal-based counseling increases contraceptive implant and IUD use in HIV-discordant couples in Rwanda and Zambia,” (Contraception, Volume 88, Issue 1, July 2013), Rice was one of several researchers examining the uptake of two long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods — intrauterine devices (IUD) and hormonal implants — among HIV-discordant couples in Rwanda and Zambia. She also co-authored “Workplace Hazards to Women’s Reproductive Health,” (Minnesota Medicine, September 2007) with Beth A. Baker, M.D., in which they discuss the impact of commonplace workplace hazards such as chemicals, physical exertion and activities, and infectious agents on the reproductive health of the female labor force.

University Notes

Police talk freshman safety on YouTube

Representatives from the Benedictine University Police will participate in a round table on campus safety for incoming college freshmen that will broadcast live through Bolingbrook local cable at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 17. The production will also run on the Bolingbrook Police Department YouTube channel. Topics that will be covered include sexual assaults, general safety, alcohol related violations/binge drinking, property crimes on campus and safety for commuting students. 

Former U.S. attorney general to speak at Benedictine

The Center for Civic Leadership, the Illinois Republican National Hispanic Assembly of Illinois and the DuPage County Bar Association will present former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 24 on the second floor of the Krasa Center. Gonzales will present “The Challenges of Enforcing Federal Law.” The cost is $75 for attorneys/legal professionals and $50 for the general public. Cocktail hour begins at 5:00 p.m. with dinner at 6:00 p.m. The event will also feature a vocal performance by Daniel Rodriguez, “America’s beloved tenor.”

Volunteers needed for annual golf outing

Spend an evening at "National Night Out"

The Benedictine University Police will host a “National Night Out” from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5 in the Neuzil Hall parking lot. “National Night Out” is a community-police awareness-raising event held the first Tuesday of August. The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada. The event is an opportunity to get to know your neighbors, local, state and federal law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics. There will be food, demonstrations, a raffle, kids games, display of vehicles and equipment, and more. For more information, call (630) 829-6662.

Admissions dates for this summer

A College of Business Adult and Graduate Open House is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16 and a College of Education and Health Services Graduate Open House is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23. Both open house events will be held at the Neff Welcome Center.

Denim Days are back

Denim Days are back for summer. Donate $5 per Friday to the College of Business building or the general scholarship fund and wear jeans to work on Fridays. Donate $70 upfront to get 17 stickers to wear jeans, which you can share with coworkers or donate $35 upfront and get 8 stickers. Applies to new donations only. Current payroll deduction donors can increase their donations accordingly to become eligible. Forms can be dropped off at the Office of the Annual Fund in the Krasa Center, Room 035. Publicity announcements of general interest to faculty, staff and/or the student body of the University by academic units, University departments and/or student organizations are the only type of material(s) allowed to be posted on University property. Outside agencies must advertise via the Candor. Community announcements can be posted on the community board located in the lower level stairwell of Krasa Student Center. The Office of Career Development will distribute job opportunity announcements. All announcements must meet the educational goals and promote the mission of the University. A Taizé prayer service is held on the third Friday of the month at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 22 W. 415 Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn.Call (630) 469-1394 for more information. Who do you call in a medical emergency? All calls for medical assistance should be directed to University Police at (630) 829-6666 or ext. 6666 from any in-house telephone. If the situation is life-threatening, immediately dial 911. There is no need to pre-dial “8” for 911 or 6666. To expedite the response for any emergency, whether medical or psychological, do not attempt to contact Student Health Services. Their availability is not assured. University Police will respond, assess the situation and take appropriate measures.

Sunday Mass will resume August 24

The first Sunday Masses of the Fall 2014 Semester will be offered at 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on August 24. The first Daily Masses of the new term will be offered at 7:25 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25.

The mixtures of cultural, religious and decorative styles found in Mexico and Peru during the 16th century are out of this world. Parker, curator of the Benedictine University Art Collection, will discuss the origins of some of these practices and show examples of art and decorative arts. Parker is a practicing artist and has been curating exhibitions for more than 20 years. She earned a Master of Fine Arts  from Illinois State University.

Oulette will give an engaging discussion about the ancient pre-Columbian Popul Vuh codex and how it helped shape the Mayans’ belief about creation and death.  Oullette is an instructor of Art History at College of DuPage and earned a Ph.D. in Art History from Northern Illinois University.

Healthy Table

“Fed Up,” a movie created by producer Laurie David and directed by Stephanie Soechtig, reveals that much of the information regarding food and exercise that has been disseminated during the past 30 years is wrong. People are encouraged to join the “Fed Up Challenge,” which is a pledge to go 10 days without sugar. Fresh, whole fruit can be substituted for soda, artificial sweeteners, sugar substitutes, sugared candy and sugar sweetened beverages. Hidden sources of sugar can also be found in yogurt, canned foods, spaghetti sauce, ketchup and energy bars. More than 200,000 people have joined the Fed Up Challenge.

Volleyball camp teaches the basics for boys and girls

The Benedictine University Summer Volleyball Camp for girls and boys ages 7-13 will be held from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Wednesday-Friday, July 30-August 1 at the Rice Center.
