The Office of University Ministry is sponsoring an essay contest and symposium for high school and college students, “Light of the Nations: Reflecting on Vatican II.” The topic of the essay and the question the symposium will try to address is, “Is the Church a Sacrament? How and why does it matter?” Submissions for the essay contest are being accepted through Sunday, February 10. Winners can earn a scholarship, get published in an online journal and be invited to present their essay at a symposium on Saturday, March 2 in the Krasa Center. The Office of International Programs and Services is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 Chinese Government Scholarship. The partial scholarship covers tuition, on-campus accommodations and basic medical insurance for eligible Benedictine students to study at one of the major universities recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Seven Benedictine students have been awarded this scholarship during the past three years. The program is administered by the China Scholarship Council under the Ministry of Education in China. The deadline for application is March 1. Interviews will be conducted the week of March 4-8. Benedictine University provides area children with a variety of activities that promote fitness and fun while offering their parents a break with “Kids Nite Out” from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 in the Dan and Ada Rice Center. Children can choose from a variety of activities including arts and crafts, kickball, relay races, basketball, bingo and group games. Kids should bring a gym bag with items clearly marked with a family name. It is not necessary for kids to bring any money. A treat and drink will be provided and there will be no items for sale. Kids can bring a snack and water bottle if desired. “Kids Nite Out” is open to any boy or girl ages 4 through 12. The fee is $15 per child. Each child must be registered by a parent. Registration will be held at the door on the night of the program. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and children must be picked up promptly at 9:00 p.m. The event serves as a fundraiser for Benedictine’s women’s varsity softball team. The team’s members serve as moderators. The sixth annual Faith and Reason Symposium,“... To the Least of These My Brethren: How Faith and Science can Fight Hunger, from the Local to the Global,” will be held from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12 in the Krasa Center Presentation Room. The event is sponsored by the Center for Civic Leadership’s Hunger Team, the Abby Endowment, the Center for Mission and Identity and the Global Studies Forum. Guest speakers and panelists include Diane Nilan, founder and executive director of HEAR US, an organization dedicated to ending child poverty in the United States, and Kim Perez, executive director of People’s Resource Center of DuPage County.
The 23rd Annual Health Professions Fair will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 on the first floor of the Birck Hall of Science. The primary goal of this fair is to allow students to meet admissions representatives and counselors from professional schools and military services. The fair is appropriate for students who are interested in medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, veterinary science and allied health.

Denim Days are back! Perfect timing for the cold weather!
Donate to the General Scholarship Fund and have the opportunity to wear jeans to work on Fridays from February 8 to March 22. That’s seven weeks of Fridays! Donate $5 per Friday or if you pay $35 upfront, you can still get an eighth Denim Day free to donate to an eligible colleague. If you don’t wear jeans, you can still donate. You may also donate $5 on behalf of a co-worker who then could wear jeans. Please consider donating, and we thank all who participate.

This is a new donation. Current payroll deductions do not apply, but you may increase your payroll deduction accordingly to qualify. Denim Days is valid for Fridays only from February 8-March 22. Prior to wearing jeans, please contact Jill Poskin or Josh Wolfgang with the Office of the Annual Fund, located in lower level of Lownik Hall, 019 or 056, to obtain the required form to submit along with your donation. You will receive a dated sticker corresponding with the eligible Fridays. We ask that you wear that sticker on the Fridays you wear jeans. Participants are responsible for securing supervisor approval before participating.
