Do I need a library card?Your BenCard is your library card and can be used at Benedictine University and other I-SHARE libraries.
Most students are automatically added to the library patron database when they register for the current semester. If you are not in the database or are having issues accessing our resources please call the Circulation Desk at (630) 829-6050.
How do I check out materials from the library?Library materials including course reserves may be checked out at the Circulation Desk on the main (2nd) floor of the library. Bring the materials you would like to check out and your BenCard (or other photo ID) to the desk and the staff will assist you in checking out.
How long can I keep materials?Books
- Undergraduate students: 4 weeks
- Graduate students, faculty, administrators and staff: 16 weeks
Audiovisual & IMC materials
- 2 weeksMagazines, journals, newspapers, microforms, reference books and archival materials
- These items do not circulate and must be used in the library.
How can I see what I have checked out or requested?Books checked out from Benedictine University and other I-SHARE libraries (items requested via VuFind for interlibrary loan) can be reviewed when you log in to VuFind. Articles requested and received via ILLiad at BenU Library can be reviewed when you log in to ILLiad.

How do I renew materials I've checked out?You may log in and renew items from Benedictine and other I-Share libraries in VuFind. You can also call the Circulation Desk at (630) 829-6050 to renew materials you've checked out.
Where are the study rooms? Who can use them?
Study rooms are located on the 3rd through 5th floors of the library. There are eleven rooms total and all rooms have computers. Study rooms are intended for group rather than individual use.
Use of the library study rooms requires two Benedictine IDs. Faculty and staff are prohibited from using library study rooms for university meetings without express permission from the library director.
How do I reserve a study room?
Students working in groups may reserve study rooms a minimum of three hours in advance by visiting or calling the Circulation Desk at (630) 829-6050. Study rooms may be reserved for four hours at a time. Study rooms may not be reserved for individual use. Any room not claimed within 15 minutes of the reservation or left unattended for more than fifteen minutes will become available on a first-come, first-served basis. Consecutive weekly reservations may be made four weeks at a time.
