Undergraduate Allied Health Program Majors
The College of Science offers undergraduate allied partnerships through the Pre-Professional Health Program Office, that allow students to complete their degrees while serving clinical internships at area hospitals, health care facilities and universities. There is also a dual-acceptance program with Chicago College of Pharmacy at Midwestern.

All of the University's allied health programs are accredited and meet the highest professional standards, ensuring the Benedictine graduates are among the most sought-after candidates by nationally-recognized professional schools.

Clinical Laboratory Science

Students in the clinical laboratory science program must complete at least 90 semester hours with a minimum GPA of 2.8 at Benedictine University. Students MUST APPLY for admission to Hines V.A., our clinical educational program affiliate hospital, during their junior year. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents may enter the Hines V.A. Program.
 


Clinical Life Science - Perfusion Technology

Perfusionists are highly-skilled professionals who operate life-support equipment such as heart-lung machines, intra-aortic balloon pumps and ventricular assist devices during open-heart surgery. Integral members of the cardiovascular surgical team, perfusionists are present in the operating room when it is necessary to support or replace a patient's cardiopulmonary and circulatory functions. Perfusionists also provide services for venovenous supported cardiac catherization procedures extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and blood salvaging for orthopedic or general surgery procedures.


Clinical Life Science - Respiratory Care

Respiratory therapists provide care for a diverse patient population, from newborns and children to adults and the elderly, with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system resulting from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, heart attack, infant respiratory distress, pneumonia, postoperative surgical complications, shock, stroke and trauma. Respiratory therapists perform patient assessment, care plan development and respiratory care protocol and administration; critical care, including airway care, ventilatory support, physiologic monitoring and advanced life support; perinatal and pediatric respiratory care; cardiopulmonary diagnostics and pulmonary function testing; and patient education.


Diagnostic Medical Sonography

The diagnostic medical sonography curriculum is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive body of knowledge and the necessary skills expected of a competent program graduate. The curriculum includes didactic instruction that provides learning experiences to enhance understanding and performance of clinical responsibilities.
             


Nuclear Medicine Technology Program

Students in the nuclear medicine technology program must complete at least 90 semester hours with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.7 at Benedictine University. Students MUST APPLY for admission to Hines V.A., and/or Northwestern Memorial Hospital, our clinical education program affiliate hospital, during their junior year.
                


Radiation Therapy Program

Radiation Therapy uses high energy X-rays, electron beams, or radioactive isotopes as cancer-killing agents. These therapies change the direct physical process of individual cells.  The radiation therapist is a highly specialized healthcare professional who is an important part of the healthcare team. The team includes physician, physicists, and nurses. Radiation therapy is one of the most effective treatments today for many cancers and an increasing number of other medical conditions. The radiation therapist delivers highly technical skills to patients requiring high touch care.
