Department alumna Melissa Kosar films a scene. The Department of Communication Arts at Benedictine University offers a variety of opportunities for the serious-minded student interested in a career in mass media and related fields. Our program is designed primarily for the generalist, the savvy student who understands that 21st century communications demands people who are accomplished in a variety of areas of writing, editing and production. Our programs are both theoretically and practically based, preparing the student for the horizontal and vertical career moves they will likely make during their lives. The key to today's media environment is convergence, and our programs prepare students with the best chance to succeed in their careers.

In addition to our undergraduate program in Communication Arts, the Department offers a major in Writing and Publishing, as well as a special concentration in Sports Communication.  Our students benefit from a range of courses in both theory (law and media studies) and applied areas (journalism, electronic media, web design, and public relations), as well as the opportunity to pursue internships in the Chicagoland area, the third largest media market in the country. Students in all of our majors also get hands-on experience through such annual print media publications as the DuPage Valley Review, an arts and creative writing publication; Room with a View, a creative writing publication; and the CommArts Chronicle, a departmental newsletter. Students may also work on the award-winning Benedictine student newspaper, The Candor, published weekly in either print or web form, and in video with Eye of the Eagle, the campus cable news magazine program produced six times a year.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our majors, our curriculum, our faculty, and the many opportunities available to students.
