      Academy of Management Presentations

Kevin Doyle, Chris Garrabrant (Ph.D. in OD student), Mary Lou Kotecki (Ph.D. in OD graduate), Deb Shearer (Ph.D. in OD graduate), and Sue Tinnish (Ph.D. in OD student) presented "A Time for Revisiting O.D. Opportunities and Challenges" at the Midwest Academy of Management's 42nd Annual Conference, on Oct. 22-24, 2009 in Chicago.

      Pedagogy Presentations

Sharon Borowicz presented "Lessons Learned: Training Faculty to Teach in an Asian MBA program" and Kevin Doyle presented "Critical Chain Stimulation Exercises" at the 2009 Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area Scholarship of Pedagogy Symposium on Oct. 17.

      Program Director Named

John Draut was named Program Director for Benedictine University's Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program on September 29, 2009.

      Selection Committee

In August 2009, Lu Zhang was chosen as a member of the selection committee that will select China's top 10 New Class Elite Leaders in celebration of the 30th anniversary of China's reform and open-door policy. "New Class Elite Leaders," as coined by the Chinese Government, refers to rising business and entrepreneur stars from the private sector and multinational companies that manage in excess of $1.5 trillion in capital and play crucial roles in China's development. This landmark event is sponsored by China Business FocusAustralia DailyInternational Daily News (United States), The Mirror Newspaper (Hong Kong) and Global Business Connection(China). The selection committee is composed of 12 members and is co-chaired by Bob Hawk, the former Prime Minister of Australia, and Zhang Huaixi, former Deputy Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

      Caucus Session

Kevin Doyle and Jean-Marie Kauth of Benedictine University's Language and Literature department organized and presented a caucus session on "How to Make Green Matter on Campus" at the Academy of Management annual meeting in Chicago on August 10, 2009. They reported on Benedictine's experience with "Years for the Environment," and shared with faculty from St. Louis University, Berea College and Farleigh Dickinson University the special challenges and opportunities of "greening a campus."

      Speaker Presented

On June 18, 2009, the MBA department hosted James G. S. Clawson, author of "Level Three Leadership," as the featured speaker of their final 2008-2009 faculty professional development program. This event was developed by Sharon Borowicz, Theresa Smallwood and Susan Stackley. Clawson is a professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. More than 60 faculty and students from Benedictine's MBA, MSA, MIS, MOB and OD programs attended the presentation. The MBA department hosts three faculty professional development opportunities each academic year to help full-time and adjunct faculty in the MBA, MSA and MIS programs hone their pedagogical skills and stay informed of new theories and research in the field of leadership and business administration.

      Panel Presentations

Kevin Doyle, with Maria de la Camara, Chris Fletcher, Pat Flynn, and Jean-Marie Kauth of Benedictine University's College of Liberal Arts, Tim Marin, Al Martin, and Allison Wilson of Benedictine's College of Science, and Don Taylor, Provost, attended the Third Annual Benedictine Pedagogy Conference at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA on May 28-30, 2009.  As part of the Benedictine University panel on welcoming new members to our community, Wilson and Doyle presented on "New Faculty Mentoring Program" and how mission and identity affect faculty, and Doyle and Fletcher presented on "Module in First M.B.A. Course Addresses Benedictine Values."

      Election to Board of Directors

Jack Malec was elected to the Board of Directors of Chicago Tube and Iron Co. CTI is a 95-year old company based in Romeoville, IL, with nine facilities throughout the Midwest.

      Presentation to Local Company

Kevin Doyle and Jean-Marie Kauth of Benedictine University's Writing Program presented "Greening the Campus – Benedictine University's Years for the Environment" at Alcatel-Lucent's Naperville facility on March 25, 2009. This invited talk was the concluding event in Alcatel's "Women's History Month." This year's theme was "Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet." The talk drew on a presentation by Tim Marin of Benedictine University's Chemistry department at the Fall 2008 "Faith and Reason" event, "Predicting Climate Change: Thermodynamics and Kinetics," and outlined the science and Benedictine values that make Years for the Environment imperative, what Benedictine has been doing and the institutional challenges and opportunities of this program.

      Interview in Business Ledger

John Draut was interviewed by the Business Ledger for a story published in the March 23, 2009 edition. Draut highlighted the importance of real world experience combined with solid academic theory when teaching today's graduate students. "Since my first day as an adjunct instructor, I have worked continuously in business," he said. "My classes are rich in my personal experiences, from traveling overseas to managing diverse groups of people in varying organizational structures."

      Election to Advisory Board

Jack Malec was elected to the Advisory Board of Unified Alloys Corp. Unified Alloys is based in Edmonton, Alberta, and has five facilities throughout Canada.

      Paper Published

Kevin Doyle's paper "The Benedictine Tradition, Catholic Social Teaching and the mission of business education in the Catholic university", with Christine Fletcher of Benedictine University's Theology department, was published at the Business Education at Catholic Universities conference, June 11-13, 2008, Notre Dame, IN.

      Professional Certification

Kevin Doyle earned his Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute on April 9, 2008, culminating over a year of experience review, study, and testing.

      Research Presented

In March 2008, Sharon Borowicz presented her research on communication attributes of effective virtual teams at both the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education International Conference (SITE) 2008 and at the 2008 Western Academy of Management Annual conference.

      Research Presented

Kevin Doyle's paper "Team Projects and Peer Evaluations", with Ralph D. Meeker of Benedictine's Computer Science department was presented at 2007 ACCA Scholarship of Pedagogy Symposium, October 6, 2007, Romeoville, IL, the 2008 College Teaching and Learning Conference, January 3, 2008, Orlando, FL, the MBA department professional development dinner on February 8, and at the Benedictine faculty colloquium on April 4. The paper was selected as a conference Best Paper at the 2008 College Teaching and Learning Conference and subsequently accepted for publication in the College Teaching Methods and Styles Journal.

      Research Presented at Annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning

Sharon Borowicz' paper "What online courses are doing to prepare virtual team members" was presented at 23rd Annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning in August 2007, and will be presented at the MBA department professional development dinner on February 8.

      Paper to Appear in Selected Procedings of the Associaton for Core Texts

Kevin Doyle's paper "The Rule of St. Benedict as a Business Core Text," will appear in Selected Proceedings of the Association for Core Texts and Courses 2006. Doyle is also a co-editor of the Proceedings.

      Paper Presented at the Association for Advancement of Computing in Education's

Sharon Borowicz presented a paper, "How Online M.B.A. Programs Help Students Develop Virtual Team Skills Necessary in the Workplace," at the Association for Advancement of Computing in Education's 2006 E-Learn Conference in October 2006.

      Paper Presented at the Symposium on Management, Engineering and Informatics

Kevin Doyle's "Theory of Constraints Experience: Batch Size and Multitasking," with David Long of Taqua was presented at the Symposium on Management, Engineering and Informatics 2006, July 16-19, 2006, Orlando, FL, and selected as Best Paper in session by peer evaluation. It was subsequently published in the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Management, Engineering and Informatics 2006 .
